Gary Garcia, who teamed with Jerry Buckner to perform the 1982 hit “Pac-Man Fever,” a song synonymous with 1980s pop culture and America’s early love affair with arcade gaming, died yesterday at his home in Englewood, Fla. He was 63.

I will always have a pocket full of quarters thanks to you.

MAME and MESS 0.144 released

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Sonic Generations was released this week, so I celebrated by playing some classic Sonic. Here’s Sonic 2 from the Genesis (Mega Drive) played on the MESS emulator, which I am using more and more for older emulation.

I played this way too much at my local arcade back in the day. The sit-down cabinet was awesome.

Sadly, emulating it without a steering wheel and pedals just isn’t the same…

Super Mario Bros. 3

Can’t get much more classic than this. Probably my favorite Mario game of all time.

Quake in a browser

This is Queke 1, running at near-native speeds, in the Chrome browser thanks to the NaCl (Native Client) technology Chrome added to run programs without having to go through slow Flash or Java, while still running in a sandbox. Pretty impressive stuff. I don’t think any other browser is interested in the technology, though.

Never liked the 3d games for the newer systems and the Gameboy Advance versions were just okay. This game still defines Metroid to me.
